Natural stone, laid on a full bed and pointed properly
Indian sandstone is the patio stone we lay most. Every slab is different, with natural ripples and colour running through it, and it comes in buff, rainbow, grey and mixed tones that suit red brick houses across Tamworth.
The difference between a patio that lasts and one that rocks and stains is in the laying. We dig out, lay and compact a sub-base, then bed every slab on a full bed of mortar, not dabs, so there are no hollow spots for water to sit in. Slabs are laid to a fall away from the house and pointed so the joints stay sealed.
Most of our sandstone patios are finished with something extra: a charcoal block border, sleeper steps between levels, an ACO channel by the back door, a curved edge to the lawn or a brick wall round the outside. You can see all of these in the photographs below.

How we do it
How we lay indian sandstone
- Design. Agree size, shape, levels and stone colour.
- Dig out. Remove old slabs or turf and reduce levels.
- Base. Lay and compact the sub-base.
- Lay. Bed each slab on full mortar to a fall.
- Point. Point the joints and fit borders and steps.
- Clean. Wash down and hand over.
